Car wash soap dilution ratios: a guide straight off the labels

Three popular shampoos, three completely different doses. Chemical Guys says 1 to 3 oz of Mr. Pink in a 5-gallon bucket. Turtle Wax says 3 to 9 oz of Max Power in a 2 to 3 gallon bucket. Griot's says 1 oz makes 2 gallons of soap. Those are ratios of roughly 1:213, 1:43 and 1:256 — a six-fold spread between products sold for the same job.
That spread is why "a couple of capfuls" is useless advice. A concentrate at the wrong dose is either an expensive bucket of water that will not lubricate the mitt, or a slick bucket that rinses badly and leaves streaks on glass.
Below is what each maker prints, converted to ratios you can check, plus the arithmetic for a foam cannon, which is a different calculation entirely. Every figure comes from the manufacturer's own product page, and the pages are linked at the bottom. Two well-known brands publish no dose at all, and they are named too.

How much car soap per gallon of water?
It depends entirely on the concentrate. Griot's works out at 1 oz per 2 gallons, Chemical Guys Mr. Pink at 1 to 3 oz per 5 gallons — about 0.2 to 0.6 oz per gallon — and Turtle Wax Max Power at 3 to 9 oz per 2 to 3 gallons, which is around 1 to 3 oz per gallon. Read the label, because the spread between brands is six-fold.
Can I use more soap than the label says?
You can, and it mostly costs money. Extra soap rinses less cleanly and streaks glass, but it does not damage paint. Too little soap does, because the mitt stops sliding and starts dragging grit.
How much soap goes in a foam cannon?
Chemical Guys says 1 to 3 oz in the 34 oz bottle topped with warm water. Adam's says 2 to 5 oz in its 1 L bottle. Then use the cannon's knob to control how much of that mix is drawn into the water stream.
Is dish soap ever acceptable?
No. It strips wax and sealant, dries rubber trim and is not pH-neutral. The cheapest dedicated car shampoo at its correct dilution outperforms it on the only measure that matters, which is how slippery the water is under the mitt.
Does soap concentration affect a ceramic coating?
Strong, high-pH mixes shorten a coating's life. Wash a coated car with a pH-neutral shampoo at the weak end of its range, and keep all-purpose cleaners and strong wheel chemistry off the paint.
How much soap do I need for one wash?
Between about 1 and 9 oz depending on the product and how dirty the car is. A 16 oz bottle of a concentrate like Griot's is therefore many washes; a 16 oz bottle of a weaker soap used at 3 oz a bucket is five.

The conversions are straightforward: a US gallon is 128 fluid ounces, so a 5-gallon bucket holds 640 oz and a 2-gallon bucket holds 256. One ounce of Mr. Pink in 640 is 1:640; three ounces is 1:213. Nine ounces of Max Power in a 2-gallon bucket is 1:28 at the strongest reading of the label, and 1:43 at 3 gallons.
Turtle Wax is explicit about why its range is so wide: use it more diluted for a gentle wash that will not strip wax, and more concentrated in the bucket to degrease a neglected car. That is the correct way to think about every soap on this page — the range is a control, not a tolerance.
Why the ratio matters more than the brand
A car wash shampoo is doing two jobs at once. It lifts road film chemically, and it makes the water slippery enough that whatever grit the mitt picks up slides rather than drags. The second job is the one that saves your paint, and it is the one that fails first when the mix is thin.
Under-dosing is the common mistake. The bucket foams a little, the mitt feels fine on the first panel, and by the third the fibers are dry-ish and loaded. Over-dosing is rarer and cheaper to fix: too much soap rinses poorly, dries streaky on glass and wastes concentrate, but it does not scratch anything.
If you are unsure, dose at the strong end of the maker's range for a dirty car in winter, and at the weak end for a maintenance wash on a coated car. On a car with a ceramic spray coating, stay pH-neutral and weak — strong degreasing mixes shorten a coating's life faster than weather does.
Filling the bucket so it actually foams
Every label that bothers to explain the technique says the same thing: put the soap in first, then fill with a strong stream of water. Turtle Wax spells it out — fill using a powerful stream to produce foam, and keep filling until the foam reaches the top of the bucket.
- Dose the soap into the empty wash bucket.
- Fill from the hose at full force, aimed at the soap, not down the side.
- Fill the second bucket with plain water and drop a grit screen in it.
- Start at the roof, one panel at a time, rinsing the mitt against the screen between panels.

Foam cannon and foam gun doses are a different calculation
A cannon bottle is not a bucket. The soap goes into a 32 or 34 oz bottle of water, and the machine then dilutes that mix again as it draws it into the water stream. That is why cannon doses look enormous next to bucket doses:

Two things follow from that table. First, warm water in the bottle is specified, not optional — Chemical Guys says warm, and concentrate dissolves properly in it. Second, the Adam's cannon costs roughly twice as much soap per fill as the Chemical Guys one, which over a year of washes every other week is a real difference in what a gallon of shampoo costs you.
The knob on the cannon is the third variable. It changes how much of that bottle mix is drawn into the stream, so the same fill can produce thin foam or shaving cream. Start at the maker's lower dose with the knob halfway, and adjust the knob before you adjust the bottle.
Water, temperature and hardness
Hard water needs more soap to produce the same suds, because the minerals consume surfactant before it gets to the car. If your kettle furs up, dose at the top of the range and expect to rinse more thoroughly. Hard water is also what turns a slow drying job into water spots, which is the argument for a large drying towel and a sheeting final rinse.
Temperature helps the concentrate dissolve, which is why foam cannon instructions specify warm water in the bottle. It does not help the paint: a hot panel flashes water dry and spots regardless of what is in the bucket. Wash in shade, on a cool surface, whatever the label says.
The brands that publish nothing
Adam's Car Wash Shampoo and Mothers California Gold High Performance Car Wash are both well-regarded soaps whose product pages carried no dilution instruction when this page was written on September 12, 2026. Mothers publishes the net content — 16 fl oz — and nothing about how much to use.
That is not a reason to avoid them, but it is a reason to check the bottle before you are standing over an empty bucket with a hose running. Where a maker publishes a range, use it; where none exists, start at about 1 oz per gallon and adjust by how the mitt feels on the second panel.
