The one specification that matters on the inside of a windshield is ammonia. Ammonia attacks aftermarket window film and dries out rubber and vinyl around the glass, and four of the six products here state in writing that they contain none. Aftermarket window film is a dyed polyester laminate held on with adhesive, and ammonia degrades both. It also dries the rubber and vinyl around the glass. Stoner, Mothers and Chemical Guys all state ammonia-free on the products in this guide; household blue glass cleaner generally does not.
What actually causes streaks on car glass?
Usually the cleaner rather than the dirt. Soaps, scents and dyes dry into a film that shows up in low sun, which is why Stoner sells Invisible Glass on containing none of them. The second cause is a towel that has met fabric softener, which coats the fibers and smears.
What towel should I use on glass?
A dedicated waffle-weave or glass-specific microfiber, washed without fabric softener, and two of them — one damp to clean and one dry to buff. The buff pass is what removes the last of the cleaner, and doing it with the same towel just moves the film around.
How do I clean the inside of a windshield?
