The best car glass cleaners for windshields and windows (2026)

Buy Invisible Glass Auto Glass Cleaner ($). It is 22 fluid ounces, it is the least money in this guide by a wide margin, and Stoner states it contains no added soaps, scents or dyes โ€” which is the actual mechanism behind a streak-free window, because the streak is almost always the additive rather than the dirt.

The one specification that matters on the inside of a windshield is ammonia. Ammonia attacks aftermarket window film and dries out rubber and vinyl around the glass, and four of the six products here state in writing that they contain none. The two that do not state it are named as such in the table.

Everything below comes from the maker's own product page: bottle size in fluid ounces, whether ammonia is excluded, and whether the maker states the product is safe on tint. Nothing has been sprayed on a windshield by us.

How to shop for a car glass cleaner

Ammonia, stated in writing
Ammonia damages dyed aftermarket window film and hazes it over time. Stoner, Chemical Guys and Mothers all state ammonia-free in their own copy. Two products in this guide do not state it either way, and on the inside of a tinted window that silence is the deciding factor.
Whether the maker says it is tint-safe
Ammonia-free and tint-safe are related but not identical claims, and the makers who mean it print both. Every product in this guide except one prints a tint claim.
Bottle size against a whole car
A windshield inside and out, four side windows, a rear screen and two mirrors is more glass than people expect. Bottles here run 16 to 24 fluid ounces, and the cheapest bottle in the guide is also the second largest.
What else the cleaner is rated for
Mothers rates Revision for glass, mirrors, plastic, chrome, gauges, touchscreens and phones. Adam's rates its cleaner for tinted windows and tablet screens. A glass cleaner that is also a screen cleaner saves a second bottle in the door pocket.
Delivery โ€” trigger, foam or aerosol
A foaming aerosol clings to vertical glass instead of running down onto the door card. Mothers publishes that its Speed Foaming version will not drip or run, which is a real advantage on a windshield's interior slope.
Whether it leaves anything behind
Chemical Guys HydroView is the only product here that deliberately leaves something on the glass โ€” a hydrophobic ceramic layer sold as lasting up to 12 months. Everything else is trying to leave nothing at all, and Stoner says its formula is tested residue-free by independent laboratories.

Best overall

Invisible Glass Auto Glass Cleaner 22 fluid ounce trigger spray bottle

Invisible Glass Auto Glass Cleaner

22 ounces, no soaps, no dyes

Size
22 fl oz
Ammonia
None, stated
Tint safe
Stated by Stoner
Model
92164

Reasons to buy

  • Stoner states there are no added soaps, scents or dyes in it, which is the direct cause of the film every scented glass cleaner leaves behind
  • 22 fluid ounces for the least money on this page, and by a wide margin โ€” nothing else here is close on cost per ounce
  • Ammonia-free and stated safe for all tinted glass, so it can be used on the inside of a filmed rear screen without a second thought
  • Stoner says the formula is tested residue-free by independent laboratories, which is a stronger claim than anyone else on this page makes
  • Rated for home glass too, so the bottle does not sit unused between car washes

Reasons to avoid

  • It cleans and nothing else โ€” no water beading, no coating, no protection of any kind
  • A trigger spray runs on vertical glass, where the foaming aerosol further down this page clings

This is the default answer and it has been for years. The interesting part is why it works: it is not a stronger cleaner than the others here, it is a cleaner with less in it. Soaps, scents and dyes are what dry into the haze you see at sunset, and Stoner has taken them all out and said so on the bottle.

It does nothing clever. If you want water to bead off the windshield in rain, that is a different product and it is the last pick on this page at roughly five times the money.

Not the right fit if you want rain to bead off the glass โ€” that is the HydroView coating.

Best for interior glass

Mothers Speed Foaming Glass and Screen Cleaner 19 ounce aerosol can

Mothers Speed Foaming Glass & Screen Cleaner

Foam that will not run down the dash

Size
19 oz aerosol
Ammonia
None, stated
Tint safe
Stated by Mothers
Model
16619

Reasons to buy

  • Mothers publishes that the foaming mist will not drip or run, which is the entire reason to buy an aerosol for the inside of a raked windshield
  • Ammonia-free and tint-safe, and Mothers extends the rating to gauges, GPS screens, smartphones, tablets and touchscreens
  • 19 ounces in an aerosol, which goes further than the same volume in a trigger bottle because none of it ends up on the dashboard
  • Second cheapest thing in this guide, and the only aerosol

Reasons to avoid

  • An aerosol cannot be refilled or bought by the gallon, so the long-run cost is worse than it looks
  • Foam needs a moment to break down before you wipe, so it is slightly slower than a liquid on a big outside surface

The inside of a windshield is the hardest glass on a car to clean, because it is raked, you are working upside down, and everything you spray runs down onto the dash and the defroster vents. A clinging foam solves that, and Mothers is the only maker here that publishes the no-drip claim explicitly.

Not the right fit if you are doing the outside of the car and want the most volume for the money โ€” the 22 oz trigger bottle costs less.

Best for everything else too

Mothers Revision Glass and Surface Cleaner 24 ounce bottle

Mothers Revision Glass + Surface Cleaner

24 ounces, rated well past glass

Size
24 fl oz
Ammonia
None, stated
Tint safe
Stated by Mothers
Model
06624

Reasons to buy

  • 24 fluid ounces, the largest bottle in this guide
  • Mothers rates it for glass, mirrors, plastic and chrome, and separately for tint, gauges, GPS screens, smartphones, tablets and touchscreens
  • Described by Mothers as pro-strength and ammonia-free, which is the combination people usually have to choose between
  • Also rated for home use on windows, countertops, appliances and monitors, so nothing is wasted

Reasons to avoid

  • Mid-priced here, and the Invisible Glass bottle costs less than half as much for only two ounces less
  • A trigger spray, so the same running problem as any liquid on interior glass

If you want one bottle in the trunk that handles the windshield, the infotainment screen, the chrome trim and the plastic gauge covers without you having to think about which is which, this is it. The 24 ounce bottle is the largest here, and Mothers publishes the widest surface rating of anything in this guide.

Not the right fit if you only ever clean glass and want the cheapest way โ€” take the Invisible Glass.

Chemical Guys Signature Series Glass Cleaner 16 ounce trigger bottle

Chemical Guys Signature Series Glass Cleaner

Ammonia-free, tint-safe, gallon available

Size
16 fl oz
Ammonia
None, stated
Tint safe
Stated by Chemical Guys
Model
CLD_202_16

Reasons to buy

  • Ammonia-free and stated safe on tinted windows, and Chemical Guys extends the rating to factory glass coatings
  • Sold in 16 oz and by the gallon at the same price as the other Chemical Guys gallons, so refilling the trigger bottle is cheap
  • Rated for cars, trucks, SUVs, RVs and motorcycles as well as household windows, so one gallon covers a garage
  • Cuts road film and the greasy haze that builds on the inside of a windshield, which is the failure mode a weak cleaner leaves behind

Reasons to avoid

  • 16 fluid ounces, the joint smallest size here, for more than twice what the 22 ounce Invisible Glass costs
  • No claim beyond cleaning โ€” no beading, no coating, no residual protection

This is the bottle for someone already buying Chemical Guys products, and the gallon is the reason: a refillable trigger and a gallon jug turns the worst cost-per-ounce on this page into one of the best. On its own, in a 16 ounce bottle, it is doing the same job as the Invisible Glass for more money.

Not the right fit if you are buying one bottle and want the most glass cleaned per dollar โ€” that is the Invisible Glass.

Best for slickness

Adam's Glass Cleaner 16 ounce black and green trigger bottle

Adam's Glass Cleaner

Silane in a glass cleaner

Size
16 fl oz
Ammonia
Not published by Adam's
Tint safe
Stated by Adam's
Model
GCL287

Reasons to buy

  • Adam's states it contains the same silane active used in its Glass Sealant, so it leaves a minor layer of protection rather than nothing at all
  • The silane is there to make the towel glide, which is what stops the last pass smearing what the first pass lifted
  • Rated by Adam's for all surfaces including tinted windows and tablet screens
  • Sold in 16 oz, gallon and five gallon, so the formula scales with a growing habit

Reasons to avoid

  • Adam's publishes no ammonia statement at all, which is the one thing you most want in writing on a product going onto tint
  • The most money per ounce of any straightforward cleaner on this page
  • A residual layer is a feature until you want bare glass for a wiper treatment or a proper coating

The silane is a genuinely different idea. Most glass cleaners fight smearing by evaporating faster; this one fights it by making the surface slicker so the towel does not skip. It works, and the trade is that you are leaving something on the glass and paying the most per ounce here for the privilege.

The missing ammonia statement is the reason it is not higher. Adam's says tint-safe, which strongly implies ammonia-free, but implying is not publishing.

Not the right fit if you want ammonia-free in writing โ€” Invisible Glass, Mothers and Chemical Guys all state it.

Best for driving in rain

Chemical Guys HydroView Ceramic Glass Cleaner and Coating 16 ounce bottle

Chemical Guys HydroView Ceramic Glass Cleaner & Coating

Cleans, then leaves a ceramic layer

Size
16 fl oz
Ammonia
Not published by Chemical Guys
Tint safe
Not published by Chemical Guys
Model
CLD30116

Reasons to buy

  • The only product here that leaves a hydrophobic ceramic layer behind, which Chemical Guys sells as lasting up to 12 months
  • Water beads and rolls off the windshield at speed, which genuinely improves visibility in heavy rain and reduces spotting
  • Two products in one bottle โ€” it cleans the glass and coats it in the same pass, rather than needing a separate prep step
  • Rated for windows, mirrors and windshields on cars, trucks, motorcycles, RVs and boats, and for household glass

Reasons to avoid

  • The most money on this page by some distance, for a bottle tied with two others as the smallest here
  • Chemical Guys publishes neither an ammonia statement nor a tint claim for this one, which is a strange omission on a glass product
  • A coated windshield changes how wipers feel, and some people dislike the judder a coating can introduce on a slow wipe

This is a different purchase from everything else in the guide. Nobody needs it to see out of a clean windshield, and anyone who drives at night in heavy rain will notice it immediately. Twelve months is the maker's claim and it is the only durability figure published in this category.

The missing tint and ammonia statements keep it at the bottom of the page rather than the top. Put it on the outside of the glass, which is where the beading is useful anyway.

Not the right fit if you want the cheapest honest clean โ€” the Invisible Glass does that for a fraction of the money.

How we picked

  1. Nothing here has been sprayed on a windshield by us. Bottle sizes, ammonia statements, tint claims and durability figures are quoted from each manufacturer's own product page, and those pages are linked in Sources.
  2. A product had to publish a bottle size to be included, and the ammonia and tint columns record what each maker states rather than what is likely. Two of the six publish no ammonia statement.
  3. The comparison job is one mid-size sedan with factory tint on the rear glass: windshield inside and out, four side windows, rear screen, two mirrors and the infotainment screen.
  4. Price bands were set from the price behind the button on this page on the date above. Where a maker's Amazon page priced a different pack size than the pick, the button goes to the maker's own store instead.
  5. Every comparative price sentence in the text was re-read against that order after the bands were set.

The verdict

Best overall: Invisible Glass Auto Glass Cleaner โ€” 22 fluid ounces, no added soaps, scents or dyes, ammonia-free, tint-safe, and the least money in this guide.

Best for the inside of a windshield: Mothers Speed Foaming Glass & Screen Cleaner, because foam does not run onto the dashboard. Best one bottle for everything: Mothers Revision at 24 fluid ounces. Best for rain: Chemical Guys HydroView, the only glass product here with a published durability claim.

Glass is the last panel of a wash, and the one everyone rushes โ€” how to wash a car without swirl marks puts it in the right order.

Questions people ask

Why does ammonia matter in a car glass cleaner?

Aftermarket window film is a dyed polyester laminate held on with adhesive, and ammonia degrades both. It also dries the rubber and vinyl around the glass. Stoner, Mothers and Chemical Guys all state ammonia-free on the products in this guide; household blue glass cleaner generally does not.

What actually causes streaks on car glass?

Usually the cleaner rather than the dirt. Soaps, scents and dyes dry into a film that shows up in low sun, which is why Stoner sells Invisible Glass on containing none of them. The second cause is a towel that has met fabric softener, which coats the fibers and smears.

What towel should I use on glass?

A dedicated waffle-weave or glass-specific microfiber, washed without fabric softener, and two of them โ€” one damp to clean and one dry to buff. The buff pass is what removes the last of the cleaner, and doing it with the same towel just moves the film around.

How do I clean the inside of a windshield?

Spray the towel rather than the glass, work in one direction, and use a foaming product if you have one โ€” Mothers publishes that its Speed Foaming version will not drip or run, which is the whole problem with liquids on a raked windshield. Then buff dry with a second towel in the opposite direction, so you can tell which side a streak is on.

Do glass coatings actually help?

In heavy rain at speed, yes โ€” water beads and clears without the wipers. Chemical Guys sells HydroView as lasting up to 12 months, the only durability figure published in this guide. In light rain or at low speed the effect is much less noticeable, and some people find wipers judder on coated glass.
