Buy Wall Control. It is the only brand here that says in writing what its panels hold — 100 pounds a panel on drywall anchors, 200 into studs, 10 to 15 pounds on a hook engaging two slots — and the only board that takes both its own slotted hooks and the conventional quarter-inch pegs already in your drawer.
Two numbers decide a pegboard purchase, the hanging load and the hole pitch, and no manufacturer publishes both. Wall Control publishes loads and no pitch; Triton a pitch to the half inch and no load; OmniWall neither. Wall Control also argues that a single idealised laboratory rating is potentially misleading — which is why the "350 lbs per board" figure attached to competing steel boards is worth nothing.
If your tools are heavy and awkward rather than numerous, look at Triton's LocBoard instead: 18-gauge steel, square holes on 1-1/2 inch centers, and hooks that lock in so the hook does not come off the wall with the tool. You give up every round peg you own.
How to shop for metal pegboard
Does the brand publish a hanging load
One of six does. Wall Control publishes per-panel and per-hook recommendations; Triton says only "highest industry load ratings"; OmniWall says nothing at all.
Hole shape, and whether your hooks fit
Wall Control takes slotted hooks and quarter-inch pegs; LocBoard is square-hole only; DuraBoard is round quarter-inch on 1-inch centers. The wrong choice makes your hook collection scrap.
Gauge, and whether it needs furring strips
Wall Control runs 20-gauge, LocBoard 18-gauge in a 9/16-inch boxed section, OmniWall 18-gauge; thicker steel is stiffer between fixings, which stops a loaded board bowing. Wall Control's 3/4-inch return flange and the boxed LocBoard mount straight to the wall, where DuraBoard and hardboard need a spacer kit or battens.

Locking hooks are the genuine advantage, as anyone who has pulled a hook off the wall along with a hand saw knows: square holes grip mechanically rather than by friction, and boxed 18-gauge does not flex between fixings. Two boards with the full hook set is now the only way to buy it — the bare two-packs and the single-board kits all lost their buy box by 12 September 2026. The missing load figure is why it is not the overall pick: a number beats a feel.

The cleat system is a genuinely good idea nobody else here offers. If your layout is still moving — a bench that might shift, a bay that might become a workshop — unhooking a panel and rehanging it three feet along is worth real money. Everything else is a leap of faith.

Numbers that exist only in retailer copy appear in the reasons-to-avoid, never in the spec table.
Both deciding specifications — hanging load and hole pitch — were checked on all six. One brand publishes loads, one publishes pitch, and none publishes both. Kit contents were transcribed from each brand's own list.
Mounting method was checked for whether a board needs furring strips or a spacer behind it, because that is a hidden cost and an extra inch of depth.
The verdict
Best overall: Wall Control's metal pegboard — the only brand publishing a hanging load, the only board taking both slotted hooks and quarter-inch pegs, no framework needed, lifetime warranty. The bare two-panel pack if you own hooks, the 4 ft kit if you do not.
For heavy, awkward tools it is Triton's LocBoard: 18-gauge boxed steel and hooks that lock into square holes, at the cost of every round peg you own and any published capacity. And ignore the ratings quoted on retail pages — 350 pounds a board, 250 pounds a board, 1,200 pounds are published by none of the manufacturers who made those boards.

Is metal pegboard better than hardboard?
For a garage, yes — Wall Control's 20-gauge steel is described by its maker as over ten times stronger than conventional pegboard, and neither steel nor polypropylene absorbs moisture. Triton's own hardboard publishes no hanging-load number and needs wood framing behind it.
Does pegboard need furring strips or a spacer behind it?
It depends on the board. Wall Control's 3/4-inch return flange and Triton's 9/16-inch boxed LocBoard stand themselves off the wall; flat quarter-inch boards need either the DuraHook 70016 spacer kit or wood battens, or the hooks have nowhere to go.
Will my old pegboard hooks fit a new metal board?
On Wall Control and OmniWall, yes — both accept conventional quarter-inch pegs. On LocBoard, no: square holes at 1-1/2 inch centers take LocHook 50000-series hooks only, though DuraBoard uses the classic round pattern at 1 inch on center.

Triton Products HDF Pegboard (TPB-2) — The best hardboard money buys, and it still loses. The published 5,000 psi modulus of rupture is a bending-stress figure, not a hanging load; it needs framing behind it, and it is a wood product in a room that gets damp.
Ultrawall metal pegboard, 48 × 36 in — The brand site publishes no dimensions, gauge, hole pattern, warranty or load figure — the whole specification is three sentences of adjectives, and the "1,200 lbs" capacity attached to it has no manufacturer page behind it.
