A covered bed is not a luxury item, it is the thing the veterinary guidance keeps asking for. The 2013 AAFP and ISFM environmental needs guidelines open with a safe place, described as a private and secure area, often in a raised location, that gives the cat a sense of enclosure. A cardboard box does it. So does a cube you can leave in a living room.

If there is one thing to take from this page it is that a covered bed is a welfare item rather than an indulgence, and that the measurement you need is the inside one. Buy the box your cat fits in, put it where your cat already sleeps, and leave it alone.
