Most garages are not short of storage. They are short of a plan, so the storage arrives one purchase at a time and lands wherever there was a gap — which is how a house ends up with a shelving unit blocking the only window and a bike hanging where a car door opens.

A garage wall has four usable height bands and two zones of depth, and once those are on paper the purchases sort themselves. Everything below is measured against a standard bay — about 12 feet wide, a car about 6 feet wide, a ceiling at 8 to 10 feet — and against what the products in this niche actually take up.

Do this before buying anything. The order that follows is also the order to install in, and it is not the order most people choose: ceiling first, wall track second, pegboard third, free-standing last. How to plan a garage wall covers the five measurements this plan is built on.

Questions people ask

What height should garage shelves and hooks be?

Weekly items between 36 and 60 inches, monthly items 60 to 84, seasonal above 84. Below 36 inches on the parking side a car door will reach it — doors swing out about 30 to 36 inches with a lower edge between 18 and 40 inches off the floor.

How deep can garage storage be in a one-car garage?

Twelve inches or less on the side walls, 18 to 24 inches on the end wall. A 12-foot bay with a 6-foot car leaves about 3 feet each side, and a car door needs most of that.

Where should bikes go on a garage wall?

On the end wall or the widest part of the bay. A bike hung by its front wheel stands about 28 to 32 inches off the wall — roughly the same depth as a cabinet — so it competes with the car for the same space.

What should never go on a garage wall?

Anything across the overhead door's vertical tracks, and anything protruding into the walkway between the car and the house door below head height. Those two rules remove most of the injuries and all of the door-hardware problems.

In what order should I install garage storage?

Ceiling racks, then wall track, then pegboard, then free-standing shelving and cabinets. The ceiling needs a clear floor for the ladder, the track needs one level line before anything blocks it, and the free-standing pieces fill what is left.

How do I keep a cleared garage from filling up again?

Match the height band to how often you use the thing. Anything needed more than twice a year that lives above 84 inches comes down and stays down — that migration, not a lack of storage, is what refills a garage within a season.

The four height bands

Floor to 36 inches — the car-door zone. A car door swings out roughly 30 to 36 inches and its lower edge is 18 to 40 inches off the ground. Everything in this band on the parking side is at risk of a door strike, or of striking a door. Put nothing here on the car side except things deeper than the door's swing is wide, which in practice means nothing. On the end wall the same band is the right home for heavy, low, stable items — a floor cabinet, a compressor, a wheelbarrow standing upright.

36 to 60 inches — the weekly band. This is the strip you reach without bending or a stool, and it is the most valuable real estate in the garage. Hand tools, the things you use every weekend, the spray bottles, the leads. Wall track and pegboard belong here, not higher: a pegboard mounted with its middle at eye level wastes the band underneath it and puts half its hooks out of reach above.

60 to 84 inches — the reach band. Overhead for storage, still reachable on tiptoe or with one step. Deep wall shelves, longer tools hung vertically, bins that come down monthly. Anything over about 25 pounds here is a two-handed lift at head height, which is worth thinking about twice.

84 inches to the ceiling — the ladder band. Seasonal only. Holiday bins, camping boxes, the spare wheels. Anything you need more often than twice a year will migrate back to the floor within a season, and that migration is what refills a cleared garage.

The two depth zones

A 12-foot bay with a 6-foot car leaves about 3 feet each side, and that clearance is not all yours — a car door needs most of it. In practice the side walls take systems 12 inches deep or less: wall track, pegboard, a shallow cabinet. The 18-inch cabinets and 24-inch shelving units belong on the end wall, in front of the hood, where the only cost is how far forward you park.

The numbers make the decision for you. Gladiator's Large GearBox is 18 inches deep; Seville's 60-inch UltraHD cabinet is 24; standard free-standing garage shelving is 24; a wall track system with hooks is about 8 to 12 inches loaded. In a single-car bay, the first three of those are end-wall products and the fourth is a side-wall product, regardless of which one you liked best in the photographs.

Zone the wall by job, not by object

A garage wall works best divided into three or four vertical zones, each with its own system, rather than one system stretched across everything.

Leave the door tracks and the walkway alone

Two parts of a garage wall look free and are not. The vertical tracks of an overhead door run up both sides of the opening and need clearance for rollers and the spring hardware — nothing mounts across them. And the walkway from the car door to the house door needs to stay walkable with both hands full, in the dark, which means nothing protruding into it below head height on either side.

Everything hanging along that walkway should sit above 84 inches or be shallower than 6 inches. A coat hook at shoulder height beside a door is the single most common thing people walk into in their own garage.

Install from the ceiling down

The order matters more than it sounds. Overhead racks first, while the floor underneath is empty and a ladder can stand anywhere. Wall track second, because a rail needs one level line across the whole run and you want that line set before anything blocks it. Pegboard or slatwall third, since it is the piece you will most want to move later. Free-standing shelving and cabinets last, because they are the only items that ask nothing of the building and can fill whatever is left.

Set one level line for the whole wall and transfer it with a laser or a chalk line. Garage slabs are poured with a deliberate slope toward the door, enough to be visible across a 20-foot run, so measuring up from the floor at each bracket produces a wall that visibly tilts. Measure down from the ceiling, or work from a level line, and it looks built instead of assembled.

A worked plan for a single bay

One 12-foot-wide bay with a 9-foot ceiling, a car parked in it, and a side door at the back. Ceiling: a 4 × 8 rack over the walkway rather than over the car, set at its shallowest drop, holding seasonal bins. End wall: two 36-inch cabinets or one shelving unit, 18 to 24 inches deep, in front of the hood. Side wall by the bench: four feet of pegboard with its center at about 48 inches, a bench beneath it, two shop lights in front of the bench edge rather than above it. Side wall past the bench: a 48-inch track rail at 66 inches for long tools, with the bikes at the far end where the bay is widest. Walkway: nothing below 84 inches, ever.

That plan uses four products from four categories and leaves the car in the garage — which is the actual test, and the one a wall of matching cabinets can still fail.
